My Yamaha Grizzly Won't Charge

Can you use aftermarket parts on a Yamaha ATV that won't charge? This question came up twice during our latest Partzilla live Q&A session. Our own powersports expert John Talley addresses using aftermarket parts on a Yamaha Grizzly with charging problems.

NOTE: We experienced technical difficulties during the live broadcast, which caused delays in the video, but the audio is clear. Technical difficulties also caused the session to be broken up in two, and both parts of the live Q&A are included above.

Yamaha Grizzly Charging Problems

I’ve got a Grizzly that’s not charging. Can I put aftermarket parts on it?

John Talley: I assume you’re talking about using an aftermarket stator or regulator-rectifier. I would probably shy against that, especially with those two, considering they are so important as far as keeping the machine at the proper voltage. I’d be afraid to use anything aftermarket if I were you, but it’s your call. There are so many things that are centered around having the correct voltage. I would be a little leery, so think twice before you do that.

Shop for stators

I’ve got a 2016 Grizzly 700 and it won’t charge. If I replace the stator and regulator, would this cure it, and is it ok to use aftermarket parts?

John Talley: I think we already addressed using aftermarket stuff. And if you would, go through and test your regulator and your stator before you go replacing everything, because chances are it’s going to be one or the other. It probably won’t be both, but there’s one other thing you need to take into consideration, and it’s a long-shot, but I’ve actually seen it, is you have to make sure the actual wiring harness on the unit is up to snuff. As far as going aftermarket, just be wary because as I said earlier, everything centers around that vehicle having the correct voltage. Not too high, not too low, so be careful if you decide to go aftermarket.
