Honda ATV Carb Replacement Problems

Got problems with your Honda ATV after replacing the carburetor? One of our Live Q&A viewers experienced problems with a Honda Rancher 350 after replacing the carb and asked for some advice.

Honda Rancher 350 Carb Replacement

I have a 2004 Honda Rancher 350 ES that I haven’t ridden in a while. I changed the carburetor and it started up just fine and then shut off. Now the reverse and neutral lights are on. What could be the problem?

John Talley: Alright, as far as the starting up and just shutting off, it makes me wonder if maybe you have a fuel supply problem. Because if you replaced the carb that tells me it was in really bad shape because it stayed stationary for a long period of time. So more than likely, above the petcock over on the left side if I remember correctly, it goes up inside of the fuel tank and there’s actually a very small screen filter. And I bet you that’s probably gunked up and it’s probably not letting fuel get down to your carburetor and fill it up so it’ll run. As far as the reverse and neutral lights both being on, I’m wondering if you may have inadvertently plugged or unplugged one of the neutral indicator wires or the reverse indicator wire. Because I think that reverse is actually down toward the bottom of the engine toward the back. So when you were removing the carburetor, you possibly pulled it off and then it went to ground. Just a long shot there but I think you’re dealing with two separate issues. One being the carburetor not getting fuel and then maybe a potential wiring problem that came up due to shifting things around when getting a new carburetor put in.
