How to Change Honda VTX 1800 Rear Brake Pads
Replacing the brake pads on your Honda motorcycle should be a part of its routine maintenance to keep it running at its best.

- Pliers
- Pick tool
- 3/8th ratchet
- 5mm Allen
- Flat-blade screwdriver
- Torque wrench

Replacing the Rear Brake Pads on a Honda VTX1800
Step 1. Use a flat-blade screwdriver to push the old brake pads back into the caliper.
NOTE: This step is done to compress the pistons inside the caliper and make room for the new pads. The new pads will be thicker since they have more material. Be careful not to gouge the rotor during this step.
Step 2. Use a pick tool to remove the small pin that covers the hanger pin on the caliper.

Step 3. Use a 5mm Allen to remove the hanger pin, which goes through both brake pads.
Step 4. Lift out and remove the brake pads.
Step 5. Insert the new brake pads.
NOTE: The end with the loop faces out. Route the hanger pin through the loop in the pad when you thread the pin.
Step 6. Re-insert and thread the hanger pin. Hand-tighten and then torque the pin to 13 foot-pounds.
PRO TIP: Press up on the outer brake pad, then insert the pin and run it through the loop on the pad. Do the same thing on the inner pad.
Step 7. Replace the dust cap.
Step 8. Pump the brake pedal to push the brake pistons back out and you’re done.
NOTE: Don’t skip this last step, or else you won’t have a good brake response when you initially apply the brakes.
