What Should I Do if My Honda ATV Oil Smells Bad?

If the engine oil in your Honda ATV smells bad, what can you do about it besides just changing it out? You might have to do not one, but two motor oil changes.

Partzilla’s Honda ATV expert John Talley hosts live Q&A sessions on our YouTube channel every Friday at 3pm Eastern. In this session, John was asked what to do about foul-smelling engine oil in a 2013 Honda Rancher TRX420 ES.

Honda ATV Oil Smells Bad Q&A

Hi John, the oil in my 2013 Honda TRX420 ES smells bad. What should I do?

John Talley: Well definitely change it. Hopefully it hasn’t burned inside the engine, but change it and the oil filter. If it really smells that bad, I would probably get just regular GN4 oil first. Don’t change the filter yet, just drop the oil, put in regular generic oil and just run it for a few minutes. Then, drop that oil out and put in the semi-synthetic in with a new oil filter. You want to at least get that old oil flushed out of there first. That’s what I would do with it anyway.
