How to Change Honda Foreman 500 Oil

When a Honda ATV is due for an oil change, the steps to do it yourself are pretty straightforward.

Tools and Supplies – Honda Foreman 500 Oil Change

• Ratchet
• 8mm, 17mm sockets
• Torque wrench
• Oil filter
• Honda GN4 10W-30 oil (4 quarts)

Honda Foreman 500 Oil Change

Step 1. Run the motor on idle for a minute to warm the oil, then remove the access panel cover from the left side panel, and remove the dipstick to help the oil drain faster.

Step 2. Position a drain pan under the engine, and remove the 17mm drain bolt and crush washer from the bottom of the engine. Inspect the crush washer for wear, and replace it if necessary.

Step 3. Let the old oil fully drain, then reinstall the crush washer and drain bolt, and torque the bolt to 18 foot-pounds.

Step 4. Remove the seat and the right-side fairing to access the oil filter.

Step 5. Remove the three 8mm bolts and the oil filter cover. Next, remove the old oil filter and install the new filter. 

NOTE: Make sure the spring behind the oil filter is still in place.

Step 6. Inspect the O-ring around the oil filter cover and replace it if necessary. Reinstall the oil filter cover, and tighten the bolts to 7 foot-pounds. Next, reinstall the right-side fairing and the seat.

Step 7. Refill the engine with 3.2 quarts of Honda GN4 10W-30 oil or any 10W-30 oil designed for a wet clutch system.

Step 8. Reinstall the dipstick, and idle the motor for about 15 seconds to circulate the new oil throughout the engine. Next, shut off the motor and let the oil stand for a minute.

Step 9. Remove the dipstick, wipe it clean, then set it back into the crankcase without threading it back in. Remove the dipstick again and check the oil level. Top off the oil level if necessary, then reinstall the dipstick and the access panel cover and you’re done.
