Yamaha ATV Fuel and Air Problems Q&A

From clogged fuel injectors to flames from the exhaust as a result of deactivating the secondary air system, a couple of Yamaha ATV fuel and air problems were addressed in this edition of Partzilla Live Q&A.

Our resident powersports expert JohnTalley goes live on our YouTube channel every Friday at 3pm Eastern, and in this session, several Yamaha ATV repair questions came up, including a couple of fuel and air inquiries for the YFZ450 and Raptor 700 models. 

Yamaha YFZ450

I have a 2010 Yamaha YFZ450X and the injector keeps getting clogged. The tank has been flushed and all seals are tight. Any ideas? 

John Talley: Have you checked the screen that goes into the bottom of your fuel tank pump? Because if it’s cut or dislodged or not connected or worn out, it may be pulling in debris from inside of your tank, or actually if it’s breaking down, it may be the culprit, going up through the system and stopping up the injector. I would say look at that little filter. It’s actually a pad on the bottom of the fuel pump itself, to see if it needs to be replaced.

Yamaha Raptor

What do you think about deactivating the AIS (secondary air system) on a Raptor 700? I deactivated mine and now it’s throwing flames out of my exhaust system.

John Talley: I think you just answered your own question. It’s evidently sending unburnt fuel instead of recirculating it through the AIS system. It’s sending it out through your exhaust and turning it into a blowtorch. If that makes it more fun for you to ride at night, then go with it. It’s probably not going to hurt the machine, although you’re probably going to have to repack your exhaust sooner than later because that’s eventually going to wear it out.
