How to Change the Oil in a Suzuki DR-Z400

Step 1. Remove the oil filler cap/dipstick from the top of the frame, which helps the frame to vent and the oil to drain easier.

Step 2. Position a drain pan under the engine, and remove the 17mm drain bolt and washer from the bottom of the crankcase. Let the oil drain out.

Step 8. Reinstall the O-ring into the oil filter housing, then install the new oil filter with the larger hole facing inward. Next, reinstall the spring and the oil filter cap with the small arrow pointing upward.

NOTE: Avoid overtightening the three cap bolts.

Step 9. Refill the engine with 2 quarts of 10W-40 motorcycle oil. Make sure the oil is designed for wet-clutch motorcycles.

Step 10. Reinstall the oil filler cap/dipstick, then start the engine and let it idle for a few minutes to pull the oil through the frame and into the crankcase.

Step 11. Shut off the engine and let it sit for a couple of minutes so the oil can settle.

Step 12. Remove the oil filler cap/dipstick and check the oil level. To check the level, hold the filler cap/dipstick against the threads but don’t screw it in. Top off the oil if necessary, then reinstall the oil filler cap/dipstick and you’re done.
