Step 1. Run the engine for a minute or two to warm up the oil, which helps thin it out to make it easier to drain.

Step 2. Remove the oil fill cap so that the engine can breathe when you drain it, which also makes the oil easier to drain out.

Step 3. Remove the seven 4mm Allens and the bolt on the bottom that hold the right side fairing in place. Next, remove the fairing itself to access the oil filter and drain bolt.

NOTE: Keep track of the crush washer on the bolt, and replace it if it’s damaged or missing.

Step 5. Replace the drain bolt and its crush washer after the oil is finished draining, and torque the drain bolt to 16.5 foot-pounds.

Step 6. Use a 65mm oil filter wrench to remove the oil filter, which is located on the front of the engine, behind the exhaust.

Step 7. Prepare the new oil filter for installation by using your finger to smear a little oil around the gasket at the top of the filter. This makes it easier to remove next time.
