How to Change the Oil on a Suzuki GSX-R 1300

Street bikes like the Suzuki GSXR perform best with routine maintenance that works to reduce engine wear at high RPMs. 

An oil changes is one of the most basic, yet essential maintenance tasks you can take care of quickly to make sure your Suzuki motorcycle performs at its absolute best.

Step 1. Run the engine for a minute or two to warm up the oil, which helps thin it out to make it easier to drain.

Step 2. Remove the oil fill cap so that the engine can breathe when you drain it, which also makes the oil easier to drain out.

Step 3. Remove the seven 4mm Allens and the bolt on the bottom that hold the right side fairing in place. Next, remove the fairing itself to access the oil filter and drain bolt.

Step 4. Get a drain pan underneath the engine, and remove the drain bolt with a 17mm socket. 

NOTE: Keep track of the crush washer on the bolt, and replace it if it’s damaged or missing.

Step 5. Replace the drain bolt and its crush washer after the oil is finished draining, and torque the drain bolt to 16.5 foot-pounds.

Step 6. Use a 65mm oil filter wrench to remove the oil filter, which is located on the front of the engine, behind the exhaust.

Step 7. Prepare the new oil filter for installation by using your finger to smear a little oil around the gasket at the top of the filter. This makes it easier to remove next time.

Step 8. Install the new oil filter, and torque it to 14.5 foot-pounds.

Step 9. Spray the exhaust with a little contact cleaner to remove any excess oil that has spilled on it. 

NOTE: Don’t skip this step if oil has spilled, as any excess oil on the exhaust will create smoke.

Step 10. Replace the fairing by reversing the process you used to remove it.

Step 11. Fill the unit with motorcycle engine oil

NOTE: Suzuki recommends 3.3 quarts of 10W40 motorcycle oil. Only use motorcycle oil, since automotive oil will cause your wet clutch system to slip.

Step 12. Replace the fill cap, then start the engine for a minute or two to circulate the oil. Next, stop the engine and check the sight glass. Top off the oil if necessary.

NOTE: An oil level right in the middle between the high and low marks is perfect.
