How to Replace Kawasaki KLX110 Rear Brake Shoes 

Kawasaki KLX110 brake shoes have wear indicators that tell you when they need to be changed. Brake drum shoes are a little harder to replace than standard brake pads, but the process isn't super complicated.

How to Change Kawasaki KLX110 Rear Brake Shoes

Step 1. Lift the bike so the rear wheel clears the ground.

Step 2. Remove the cotter pins from the rear axle nut and from the nut securing the torque rod bar attached to the brake drum.

Step 3. Remove the 22mm axle nut from the axle, and the 14mm nut and washer from the torque rod bar.

Step 4. Remove the rear brake adjustment nut, and pull the rear brake rod out from the brake cam lever.

Step 5. Slide the rear axle out from the wheel and swingarms.

NOTE: Don’t lose the spacers that sit on either side of the wheel between the wheel and the swingarm. Note which spacer belongs on which side because they’re different sizes and will need to be reinstalled on the correct side later.

Step 6. Remove the chain from the rear sprocket, and pull the rear wheel away from the swingarms.

Step 7. Lay the wheel flat and lift the rear brake assembly out of the brake drum.

Step 8. Pull the old brake shoes apart, and lift them up and off the brake drum plate.

NOTE: You’ll need to use a bit of force to part the brake shoes because the brake shoe springs can be tight.

Step 9. Remove the springs from the old brake shoes, and clean the springs and brake assembly with contact/brake cleaner

NOTE: If the springs are worn and have lost some of their compression, you should replace them with new brake shoe springs.

Step 10. Align the new rear brake shoes so their flat ends sit at the pivot point on the brake drum plate, and reconnect the springs to the brake shoes. Use a pair of pliers to reconnect the springs as they can take a bit of force, especially if they're new.

Step 11. Install the new brake shoes onto the brake drum plate by gripping the shoes and pulling them apart while positioning them over the pivot point and the retaining post on the drum plate.

Step 12. Reinstall the rear brake assembly into the brake drum.

Step 13. Reinstall the spacers for both sides of the wheel, with the wider of the two on the right side of the wheel.

Step 14. Loop the chain back over the rear sprocket, and slide the rear wheel back between the swingarms.

Step 15. Slide the rear axle back into the wheel and swingarms, then reinstall the axle nut and hand-tighten it.

Step 16. Reinstall the rear brake rod into the brake cam lever, then reinstall the rear brake adjustment nut and the cotter pin.

Step 17. Reattach the torque rod bar to the brake drum, and reinstall the 14mm nut and washer.

Step 18. Torque the axle nut to 47 foot-pounds, and reinstall the cotter pin.

Step 19. Tighten the rear brake adjustment nut until there’s about 3/4th of an inch of movement at the brake foot pedal, then fine-tune the foot pedal adjustment to your riding preferences and you're done.
