How Do I Know if My Honda ATV Oil Has Moly?

Should you use molybdenum engine oil in a Honda TRX450 ATV? Or should you even run your Honda ATV with oil that has moly in it at all? Probably not, as it's not good for your quad's clutch plates.

Partzilla’s Honda ATV expert John Talley hosts live Q&A sessions on our YouTube channel every Friday at 3pm Eastern. In this session, John was asked for his suggestion on what oil to run in a Honda TRX450.

Honda ATV Engine Oil Moly Q&A

How do I know if oil contains moly or not? I'm told I need to run non-molybdenum oil in the trans side of my Honda TRX450. What would you recommend running in there?

John Talley: I’m a huge fan of the Honda GN4 out of the gold bottle, and that is the non-moly one. The one with moly in it is the GN4 in the gray bottle, and you want to stay away from that. I think the only machine that Honda uses that was an old 750 automatic that they made back in the mid-80s. Why they still make that oil, I have no idea, because I wouldn’t use it in any clutch-operated machine. It’ll just make a mess out of the plates.
