How to Change the Oil in a Honda VTX1800
Changing the oil in a Honda motorcycle varies from model to model, but overall an oil change is a pretty basic maintenance job.
The VTX1800 has two oil drain plugs instead of the traditional single plug, but otherwise changing its oil is pretty straightforward. Watch the video above and follow the steps below to learn how to change the oil in a Honda VTX1800.
Honda VTX1800 Oil Change Service Steps
Step 1. Run the engine for a minute or two to warm up the oil and make it easier to drain.
Step 2. Remove the fill cap to help the crankcase breathe as the oil drains.
Step 3. Place a drain pan underneath and remove both drain plugs with a 17mm socket. One plug is located under the engine, and the other at the front of the engine.
Step 4. Let the oil drain out, and remove the oil filter with an oil filter wrench. The filter is under the engine, not far from the drain bolt.
Step 5. Install the new oil filter by first rubbing a little oil around the gasket at the open end of the filter, then getting the filter into place with the oil filter wrench and tightening it snug.
NOTE: Don’t over-tighten the oil filter.
Step 6. Replace the drain plugs, making sure they have their respective crush washers. Torque both drain bolts to 22 foot-pounds.
Step 7. Pour in 3.5 quarts of HP4 synthetic 10W40 engine oil. The VTX1800 takes 4 quarts of oil, so check the oil after you pour in the first 3.5 quarts to see if the engine will take the last half quart.
Step 8. Replace the fill cap, then run the engine for a couple of minutes to circulate the oil. Next, shut the engine off and wait a couple of minutes for the oil to settle so you can get an accurate oil reading.
Step 9. Remove the fill cap/dipstick and wipe it dry. Replace the cap but don’t thread it in, just set it on the top of the case. Next, remove it again to check the level on the dipstick.
If the oil level is low, top it off, then check it again by replacing the dipstick and pulling it out once more to make sure it’s good and you’re done.
