Yamaha YZ250 Unit Spotlight
Since 1974, the Yamaha YZ250 has offered riders a simple, lightweight two-stroke motocross bike that puts a premium on durability. It’s the last of the 250cc two-strokes, and the only machine in its class to have a cable clutch.
With its reed-valve induction two-stroke, it’s a lightweight, compact machine with a broad powerband to meet the needs of all types of riders. The YZ250 has an advanced 38mm PWK carb coupled with race-proven, carbon fiber reed valve petals to give riders a crisp feel across all RPMs. A digital CDI system controls the spark to keep a positive response from the engine across the powerband. Its large capacity radiator keeps the engine cool even when aggressively challenged.
To keep that power efficiently connected to the dirt, a close ratio, cable actuated, five-speed transmission with a heavy-duty clutch anchors the drivetrain. Out of the box, the YZ250 comes with a 2-position adjustable handlebar clamp, wide footpegs to offer a stable perch, and an adjustable clutch lever so that the motorcycle can be tailored to the rider with ease.
The aluminum frame on the YZ250 offer some of the secret sauce to the bike’s deft handling. The frame, coupled with an innovative KYB front fork with speed-sensitive dampening, offers a lightweight and durable platform. Its rear subframe features square-section tubing to save weight. Also in the rear, a fully-adjustable KYB shock with reduced friction internals and 12.4 inches of travel keeps the rear wheel planted and the power driving the motorcycle forward.
Rounding out this race-ready package is a 270mm hydraulic front brake with a 245mm out back, lightweight 21-inch front and 19-inch rear rims, and Dunlop tires. The wet weight tips the scales at 227 pounds. And the YZ250 has a seat height of 38.2 inches, a wheelbase of 58.3 inches, and a fuel capacity of 2.1 gallons of premix.
