Yamaha FZ07 Unit Spotlight
The Yamaha FZ-07 (known as the MT-07 since 2017) is a favorite among the naked bike class. With a superb balance of engine, handling, ride quality and bang for the buck, the FZ-07 is a smooth customer on the street.
Developed for release beginning in 2014, the FZ-07 was intended as a reliable platform on which to build more variants, leading to its XSR700 and Ténéré 700 dual-sport descendants.
Horsepower for the FZ-07 comes from a 689cc, liquid cooled, DOHC 4-stroke engine. This particular motor configuration offers torque at the low end of the powerband and lots of pull at high RPMs. Updated ECU specs, an efficient two-into-one exhaust and muffler, and an innovative air duct design keep air flowing through the engine, offering responsive power. Other innovations can be found in the transmission, where different cut angles for the dog gears offer excellent gearshift feel for the rider.
A naked bike normally isn’t one for aesthetics, but the FZ-07/MT-07 offers a distinctive graphics package. Parts and components are integrated, which helps create a smooth-looking naked bike with clean lines.
Underneath, a compact, lightweight frame offers a stiff underpinning. The rigidity assists in surefooted power transfer and handling. Lightweight aluminum wheels also help shave off weight as well, as the bike tips the scales at just over 400 pounds. The front suspension is a 41mm KYB fork with 5.1 inches of travel, and rear suspension is handled by an adjustable KYB rear shock, also with 5.1 inches of travel.
The entire package: a compact engine, shorter wheelbase, and other dimensions help keep this bike nimble and sporty with gads of power for the weight.
