Troubleshooting Suzuki GSXR-1000 Fuel Pump Priming

If you're having problems with your Suzuki GSX-R1000's fuel system, one of the first things to check is whether the fuel pump is priming or not, and there are some simple diagnostics checks you can run to know for sure.

You should be able to hear the pump building pressure when you turn on the ignition. If your GSX-R isn’t making reassuring sounds, you should test the electrical circuit serving the fuel pump. Watch the video above or read on below to learn how to test a Suzuki GSXR1000's fuel pump for priming issues.

Check the fuel pump relay switch, which is located behind the battery. Hold it as you turn on the ignition, and check if you’re able to feel the switch click on and off, which means it’s working.

Next, double-check that the relay is working by attaching a test light to the relay terminal that houses the positive wire (yellow wire with a red stripe). If the test light comes on and then goes out, you know that the relay is doing its job of receiving and sending power to the fuel pump.

Next, check that power is reaching the fuel pump. Unclip the electrical connector that feeds into the fuel pump beneath the gas tank. Once again, find the terminal that houses the yellow wire with a red stripe, then connect the test light, turn on the ignition, and look for the test light to switch on and off.

Having established that the fuel pump relay is working and the fuel pump assembly is receiving power, the next step is to remove the assembly. First, unbolt the fuel tank and then lift it off the motorcycle.

Next, remove the fuel tank by taking the pivot bolt at the rear of the tank off, then disconnecting the electrical cable, the fuel line and twin breather lines beneath the tank. Remove the 5mm Allen bolts securing the fuel pump assembly to the tank, and lift out the fuel pump assembly unit.

Check the wire that provides power to the fuel pump itself by attaching a multimeter to the positive wire running from the fuel pump assembly mounting plate to the fuel pump. The electrical resistance should be about 1 ohm. If there’s no reading on the multimeter, it’s an indication that the fuel pump is faulty and needs to be replaced.

After testing it, we determined that the fuel pump in our GSXR needed to be replaced, so we ordered a new fuel pump assembly and tested it to make sure it works before installing it into the bike.
