Accurate sag measurements on your dirt bike can help you properly tune the suspension and optimize your bike’s handling and performance.

Too much sag and the suspension will bottom out; too little sag and the suspension will be overly stiff. To properly measure the sag on your dirt bike, you’ll need to take three independent measurements: at rest sag, static sag and free sag.  Watch the video above and read on below to learn how to measure sag using a Motion Pro sag scale. 

At Rest Sag Measurement

This measurement is made with no load on the motorcycle’s suspension whatsoever. 

Place the bike on a stand so all its weight is on the stand, and the rear wheel and swingarm are extended all the way down. Using the Motion Pro sag scale, measure the distance between the rear axle and a set reference point on the rear end of the motorcycle, such as a rear plastic. Next, simply adjust the tool so its end touches the reference point.

Static Sag Measurement

This measurement (also known as rider sag) is made with the suspension under load from the motorcycle and rider. 

Place the machine on the ground with someone holding it upright. Have a rider sit on the bike so the suspension is compressed. Using the Motion Pro sag scale, measure the distance between the rear axle and the reference point. Hold the sag scale next to the reference point, and use the scale on the tool to read the measurement.

PRO TIP: For the most accurate sag measurement, the rider should be wearing all the gear he or she normally wears, so the load on the suspension is the same as when riding.

Free Sag Measurement

This measurement is made with the suspension under load from just the motorcycle. 

Place the machine on the ground, and push down on it a couple of times to settle the suspension. Using the Motion Pro sag scale, measure the distance between the rear axle and the reference point. Hold the sag scale next to the reference point, and use the scale on the tool to read the measurement.
