How to Change Kawasaki KLX 140 Engine Oil

Step 1. Run the engine for a minute to warm the oil, which makes it easier to drain.

Step 2. Remove the dipstick to vent the crankcase, which also helps the oil drain faster.

Step 3. Position a drain pan under the engine, and remove the 17mm drain bolt and crush washer from the lower left side of the crankcase.

PRO TIP: The crush washer doesn’t need to be replaced with every oil change, but a new one should be installed after every 3-4 oil changes.

Step 4. Let the oil drain completely, then reinstall the crush washer and drain bolt, and torque it to 13 foot-pounds.

Step 5. Remove the three 8mm bolts from the oil filter cap on the right side of the crankcase.

NOTE: Be careful not to lose the spring that’s housed under the cap.

Step 6. Remove the old oil filter, and install the new oil filter with the rubber grommet facing inward.

Step 7. Reinstall the oil filter cap, making sure the small triangle on the cap is at the top.

Step 8. Fill the engine with 1.22 quarts of 10W-40 motorcycle oil, then reinstall the dipstick.

Step 9. Run the engine on idle for about 30 seconds to circulate the oil within the engine, then shut it off and let it sit for a minute so the oil can settle.

Step 10. Remove the dipstick, then wipe it clean and insert it back into the crankcase without screwing it back in. Next, remove the dipstick again and check the oil level. Top off the oil if necessary until the level is correct and you’re done.
