Changing the Oil on a Kawasaki Ninja ZX10R
Step 1. Run the engine for a couple of minutes to circulate the oil.
PRO TIP: You don’t need to bring the engine all the way up to temperature, but circulating the oil makes it easier to drain.
Step 2. Remove the oil fill cap to allow the engine to breathe properly while it’s draining.
Step 3. Drain the oil into a drain pan.
NOTE: The 18mm drain bolt is located underneath the unit. Don’t lose the crush washer on the drain bolt.
Step 4. Replace the drain bolt and its crush washer once the oil has drained. Use a torque wrench to tighten the bolt to 15 foot-pounds.
Step 5. Use an oil filter wrench to remove the oil filter.
NOTE: Use our Kawasaki Ninja oil pump and filter diagram for reference if you need help finding the oil filter.
Step 6. Install the new oil filter and use a torque wrench with the oil filter wrench to tighten it to 13 foot-pounds.
PRO TIP: Spread a little of the old oil around the O-ring on the oil filter before screwing it in to make it easier to remove next time.
Step 7. Fill the engine with 3.9 quarts of Kawasaki 10W40 motorcycle oil.
Step 8. Replace the fill cap, then start the engine up for a minute to circulate the oil around the engine before you check the oil level.
Step 9. Check the sight glass to make sure the oil level is good, then top off the oil if necessary and you're done.
