How to Change the Oil in a 2018 Kawasaki Ninja EX650
Step 1. Run the engine on idle for a minute to warm the oil, which makes it less viscous and allows it to drain faster.
Step 2. Remove the oil fill cap from the right side of the engine, which vents the crankcase and also helps the oil drain out faster.
Step 3. Position a drain pan under the motor, then remove the 17mm oil drain bolt and crush washer from the lower left side of the engine and let the oil drain out.
Step 4. Inspect the crush washer for wear and replace it if necessary.
NOTE: Replace the crush washer every 3-4 oil changes regardless of its condition to prevent leaks.
Step 5. Reinstall the 17mm oil drain bolt and crush washer, and torque the bolt to 22 foot-pounds.
Step 6. Position a drain pan under the oil filter and remove the filter using a 65mm oil filter wrench.
Step 7. Lightly oil the O-ring in the new oil filter, then install the new filter and torque it to 12 foot-pounds.
Step 8. Fill the engine with 1.9 quarts of Kawasaki 10W40 motorcycle engine oil.
Step 9. Reinstall the oil fill cap and run the engine on idle for a minute to distribute the oil within the motor.
Step 10. Shut off the engine and let it sit for 2 minutes so the oil fully settles.
Step 11. Read the oil level on the lower right side of the crankcase. The oil should be between the upper and lower markings beside the sight glass. Top off the oil if necessary and you’re done.
As noted, the steps for changing the oil on a Kawasaki Ninja 650 are the same or similar for all Kawasaki motorcycles. However, if you want to see oil service done on an older Ninja model, watch the video below to see how to change the oil in a 2003 Kawasaki ZX12R.
