Can-Am Outlander 1000 XMR Oil Change

Changing the oil in a Can-Am ATV is a quick maintenance job that can be done with a handful of basic tools in a matter of minutes.

Tools and Supplies – Can-Am Outlander 1000 Oil Change

  • Ratchet and extensions
  • 17mm socket
  • 8mm wrench

NOTE: We changed the oil in a Can-Am Outlander 1000 XMR, but the steps are the same or similar for most ATVs.

How to Change Can-Am Outlander 1000 XMR Oil

Step 1. Run the engine for a minute to warm the oil, then remove the dipstick/oil filler cap from the right side of the engine to help the oil drain faster.

Step 2. Position a drain pan under the motor, then remove the 17mm drain bolt and O-ring from the underside of the engine and let the oil drain out.

Step 3. Inspect the O-ring for wear or damage and replace it if necessary. Reinstall the the 17mm drain bolt and O-ring, and torque the bolt to 22 foot-pounds.

NOTE: Replace the O-ring every 3-4 oil changes regardless of its condition because each time it’s tightened, it loses some of its ability to seal properly.

Step 4. Remove the front inner fender well and the footguard to access the oil filter cap.

Step 5. Remove the three 8mm oil filter cap bolts, the oil filter cap and the O-ring. Inspect the oil filter cap’s O-ring and replace it if it’s worn or damaged.

Step 6. Remove the old oil filter, then install the new oil filter with the rubber grommet facing into the engine.

Step 7. Reinstall the oil filter cap and O-ring, then tighten down the three 8mm cap bolts.

Step 8. Reinstall the front inner fender well and the footguard, then fill the engine with 3.1 quarts of 5W40 synthetic engine oil and reinstall the dipstick/oil filler cap.

Step 9. Run the motor for a minute to distribute the oil within the engine, then shut off the engine and let it sit for 2 minutes so the oil can settle.

Step 10. Remove the dipstick/oil filler cap and then clean it, reinstall it and remove it once more to read the oil level.

Step 11. Top off the oil if necessary, then reinstall the dipstick/oil filler cap and you’re done.
