Yamaha YZ450F Start Switch Installation
When Partzilla-sponsored AMA supercross competitor Scott Champion wrecked his 2018 Yamaha YZ450F, he needed, among other repairs, a start switch replacement.
Our resident Yamaha motorcycle pro John Talley was ready to help get Scott’s Yamaha dirt bike back on track. Watch the video above or follow the steps below to see how to install a start switch on a Yamaha YZ450 dirt bike.
Tools and Parts - Yamaha YZ450F Start Switch Installation
- Screwdrivers
- Start switch assembly
NOTE: Some parts like the seat, fairings, the airbox, etc. were removed or disconnected from the bike for other repairs featured in the video, so the final steps include reconnecting or reinstalling these.
Yamaha YZ450 Start Button Installation
Step 1. Remove the front steering cover or get it out of the way if your bike has one because the cable for the start button has to be routed around the front of the steering head.
Step 2. Mount the start switch assembly by its bracket, then install the bolt through the bracket holes.
Step 3. Pinch the start button assembly over the bar, bring it up and turn it so that it’s parallel with the surface on the throttle. Make sure to leave enough room for the thumb, then tighten it down.
Step 4. Route the start button cable through the holder on the left side of the machine, then wrap it around and make its connection to the plug right under the flap.
Step 5. Use a couple of zip ties to secure the cable in place, one on the end at the handlebar and another at the opposite end.
Step 6. Reinstall the front steering cover if your bike has one, then check the cables up at the handlebar to make sure they’re connected properly and push the grip cover back into place.
Step 7. Reinstall the plastics, the airbox cover and the breather hose, then reconnect the battery, reinstall the seat and you’re done.
Other repairs done to Scott Champion’s YZ450F dirt bike during this project include replacing the fuel pump, the crankcase cover and the throttle grip, all of which you can read about below:
