Yamaha YZ450F Throttle Grip Replacement
When Partzilla-sponsored supercross competitor Scott Champion crashed his 2018 Yamaha YZ450F, his dirt bike needed — among other repairs — a throttle grip replacement.
Our resident Yamaha motorcycle pro John Talley was more than happy to help Scott out. Watch the video above or follow the steps below to see how to replace the throttle grip assembly on a Yamaha YZ450.

- Phillips head screwdriver
- YZ450 throttle grip assembly
NOTE: One thing John replaced on Scott’s YZ450 before working on the throttle grip is the shifter. If you’re doing that, check the end of the shift shaft and on the shifter itself for a dot, which need to line up when installing it.

Step 1. Slide the throttle grip up on the handlebar, then take the forward cable and bring it around the bottom and get it in the groove.
Step 2. Take the backside and lay the cable in place into its holder. Hold the assembly together, then bring the second cable around through its slot. Bring it up facing into the other one, then take the back half of the assembly and hold it all together.
Step 3. Rotate the assembly toward you, then install the two Phillips head screws that hold the bracket in place and tighten them down with the screwdriver.
Step 4. Push the throttle assembly all the way in, then tighten the bottom screw first, followed by the top screw.
Step 5. Check to make sure there’s just a little bit of play on the throttle grip, but not much. Maybe about a third of a millimeter before it engages.
Step 6. Pull the cover over the throttle grip assembly and you’re done.
