Changing the Oil in a Yamaha R1

Step 1. Run the engine for a minute or two to heat up the oil, which makes it a lot easier to drain.

Step 2. Remove the fill cap to let air into the crankcase as the oil drains out, which also makes the oil easier to drain.

Step 3. Remove the five 4mm Allens that hold the lower fairing in place, along with the pushpin on the bottom, before removing the fairing itself.

NOTE: The bolt has a crush washer that needs to be replaced if it’s missing or damaged.

Step 5. Reinstall the drain bolt and the crush washer after the oil drains, and torque the drain bolt to 31 foot-pounds.

Step 6. Remove the oil filter with a 65mm oil filter wrench

PRO TIP: The oil filter is a tight fit on the front of the engine, so an extension is almost a must-have for this step.

Step 7. Install the new oil filter.

NOTE: Yamaha pre-lubes the gasket at the top of their oil filter, so simply thread the new filter on and torque it to 12 foot-pounds.

Step 8. Use contact cleaner to clean off any oil that may have spilled on the exhaust, which can create smoke if not wiped away.

Step 9. Replace the fairing by simply reversing the process you used to remove it.

Step 10. Fill up the tank with 4 quarts of 10W40 motor oil, as specified by Yamaha.
