Yamaha PW50 Unit Spotlight

The Yamaha PW50 is a small dirt bike that has been a popular choice for adults hoping to get a child interested in riding the trails. With an adjustable throttle and a fully automatic transmission, the PW50 offers a simple rider experience to let kids just get the hang of being on a bike.

It’s a simple design, with durability baked in so that the PW50 can handle a lot of punishment dished out by an inexperienced rider. A shaft drive requires very little maintenance, making the PW50 one of the simplest platforms on the market. The low seat height is the first thing you’ll notice. Less than 20 inches off the ground, the PW50 can accommodate even the youngest riders. 

Mag-style wheels offer another level of simplicity. Without spokes, there’s nothing to tighten, and the wheels are a lot more robust to handle the beating a young rider will deliver. The exhaust has a clever design that protects young riders as well. As for the powerplant, it's as straightforward as it gets. It’s an air-cooled, reed-valve induction with oil injection, so you don’t even have to mix up the fuel. With a 40mm bore and a 39.2mm stroke, the displacement comes in at 49ccs. 

The Yamaha PW50 comes with fuel delivery via a VM12 carb, and a throttle limiter so that parents can keep it slow as a rider gains ability. This junior dirt bike offers 2 inches of travel up front on a 26mm telescopic fork, and the rear unit swingarm has 2 inches of travel as well. Front and rear braking is handled by drum setups. Carrying just half a gallon of gas, the wet weight of the unit is about 90 pounds on a 33.7-inch wheelbase.
