Yamaha FJ-09 Oil Change Steps

Step 1. Run the engine at idle for a minute to warm the oil so it’ll drain faster. Next, remove the oil fill cap so the engine can breathe and to help the oil drain faster.

Step 2. Put a drain pan under the engine, then remove the 17mm drain bolt located at the front bottom of the engine and let the old oil drain out.

Step 3. Inspect the drain bolt’s crush washer, and replace it with a new one if necessary. Reinstall the drain bolt and crush washer, and torque the bolt to 31 foot-pounds.

Step 4. Remove the oil filter from the front of the engine using a 65mm filter wrench. Have shop towels or rags ready to catch the oil that spills from the old filter.

Step 5. Lightly lube the new oil filter’s O-ring with engine oil, then install the oil filter and torque it to 12 foot-pounds.

Step 6. Refill the engine with 2.85 quarts of Yamalube 10W-40 motorcycle oil.

Step 7. Reinstall the oil fill cap, and run the motor on idle for 15-20 seconds to circulate the new oil throughout the engine. Shut off the engine, and let the oil settle for a minute.

Step 8. Check the oil level through the sight glass located on the right side of the crankcase. The oil level should be between the middle and upper part of the sight glass. Top off the oil level if necessary and you’re done.
