How to Change the Oil in a Suzuki Intruder VS1400

Step 1. Run the engine for a minute to warm the oil, which helps it drain faster.

Step 2. Remove the oil fill cap/dipstick from the right side of the crankcase to allow the engine to vent, which also helps the oil to drain out faster.

Step 3. Put a drain pan under the engine, then remove the 17mm drain bolt and crush washer from the underside of the engine and let the oil drain out.

Step 4. Inspect the crush washer and replace it if necessary. Reinstall the drain bolt and crush washer, and torque them to 16.5 foot-pounds.

PRO TIP: The crush washer should be replaced after every three or four oil changes regardless of its condition to prevent drain bolt leaks.

Step 5. Move the drain pan under the oil filter at the front of the engine and remove the oil filter using a 68mm filter wrench.

Step 6. Apply a thin coat of oil to the new oil filter’s O-ring, then install the new oil filter and torque it to 13 foot-pounds.

Step 7. Fill the engine with 4.5 quarts of 10W40 motorcycle oil. Make sure the oil is designed for wet-clutch motorcycles.

Step 8. Reinstall the oil fill cap/dipstick, then start the engine and let it idle for 30 seconds to circulate the oil throughout the engine.

Step 9. Shut off the engine and let it sit for a minute to allow the oil to settle.

Step 10. Remove the oil fill cap/dipstick and check the oil level by resting the dipstick on the crankcase threads without screwing it in. Top off the oil if necessary, then reinstall the oil fill cap/dipstick and you’re done.
