How to Change the Oil in a Suzuki Intruder 1400
Step 1. Run the engine for a minute to warm the oil, then remove the oil fill cap/dipstick from the right side of the crankcase to allow the engine to vent, which helps the oil drain out faster.
Step 2. Put a drain pan under the engine, then remove the 17mm drain bolt and crush washer from the underside of the engine and let the oil drain out.
Step 3. Inspect the crush washer and replace it if necessary. Reinstall the drain bolt and crush washer, and torque them to 16.5 foot-pounds.
NOTE: The crush washer should be replaced after every three or four oil changes regardless of its condition, to prevent drain bolt leaks.
Step 4. Move the drain pan underneath the oil filter at the front of the engine, then remove the oil filter with a 68mm filter wrench.
Step 5. Apply a thin coat of oil to the new oil filter’s O-ring, then install the oil filter and torque it to 13 foot-pounds.
Step 6. Fill the engine with 4.5 quarts of 10W40 motorcycle oil. Make sure the oil is designed for wet-clutch motorcycles.
Step 7. Reinstall the oil fill cap/dipstick, then start the engine and let it idle for 30 seconds to circulate the oil throughout the engine.
Step 8. Shut off the engine and let it sit for a minute to allow the oil to settle. Remove the oil fill cap/dipstick and check the oil level by resting the dipstick on the crankcase threads without screwing it in. Top off the oil if necessary, then reinstall the oil fill cap/dipstick and you’re done.
The steps to changing the oil on a Suzuki motorcycle are the same or similar for all models. However, if you want to see an oil change on a newer model Suzuki bike, watch the video below to see how to change the oil on a 2015 Suzuki TU250X.
