Polaris Sportsman 700 Oil Service
You know how important it is to change the oil in your Polaris ATV, but do you know how fast you can do it yourself? Changing the oil in the Sportsman can be done in a handful of minutes with some basic tools.

NOTE: We changed the oil in a Polaris Sportsman 700, but the steps are the same or similar for all Polaris ATVs.

How to Change the Oil in a Polaris Sportsman 700
Step 1. Run the motor for a minute to warm the engine oil, which reduces the oil’s viscosity and helps it drain out quicker.
Step 2. Remove the dipstick from the left side of the engine (just behind the front wheel arch) to allow the crankcase to vent and also help the oil flow out faster.
Step 3. Put a drain pan under the engine, then remove the 6mm drain bolt and washer from the underside of the crankcase and let the oil drain out.
Step 4. Inspect the washer and replace it if necessary. Reinstall the drain bolt and crush washer, and torque the bolt to 21 foot-pounds.
PRO TIP: Replace the drain bolt washer after every 3-4 oil changes regardless of its condition to prevent any leaks from around the drain bolt.
Step 5. Reposition the drain pan under the oil filter and remove the filter using an oil filter wrench. The oil filter is located on the lower left side, at the bottom of the engine.
Step 6. Clean the oil filter dock on the crankcase with a rag or contact/brake cleaner to remove any contaminants before installing the new filter.
Step 7. Smear a coat of engine oil around the new oil filter’s O-ring, then install the new oil filter onto the crankcase. Torque the filter to 12 foot-pounds.
Step 8. Refill the engine with 2 quarts of Polaris PS-4 synthetic oil.
Step 9. Reinstall the dipstick, then start the engine and run it on idle for half a minute to circulate the oil throughout the engine. Next, shut off the engine and let it sit for a minute to allow the oil to settle in the crankcase.
Step 10. Remove the dipstick and wipe it clean, then fully reinsert it, remove it again and read the oil level. Top off the oil if necessary and you’re done.
NOTE: Always make sure the vehicle is level when checking the oil level.
