PRO TIP: Use a screwdriver to separate the brake pads and loosen them enough to slide off the brake disc if necessary.

Step 5. Retract the caliper’s pistons back into the caliper housing to make room for the new brake pads. Use a C-clamp to push down on the old brake pads to retract the pistons.

Step 7. Check that the caliper can slide back and forth on the mounting plate.

PRO TIP: If the caliper isn’t sliding freely, pull the mounting plate off the caliper, clean and grease the guide pins and pack the protective rubber boots with grease. The boots must be replaced if they’re torn or split. The two boots are slightly different, but you’ll find both types here.

Step 8. Install the new brake pads onto the caliper’s retaining pins and slide the caliper assembly back over the brake disc.

Step 9. Apply red threadlocker to the caliper mount bolts and torque them to 30 foot-pounds.

Step 10. Adjust the brake pad adjustment screw by tightening it in until it bottoms out, then backing it off by half a turn.
