Step 1. Run the engine for a couple of minutes to warm up the oil so it's easier to drain.

Step 2. Lift the bed to access the engine, then remove the oil fill cap on the valve cover.

Step 3. Find the opening in the skid plate underneath the Ranger to access the drain bolt. It's in the center, underneath the engine. Next, place a drain pan under the drain bolt and remove it with a 6mm Allen. Drain out the oil.

NOTE: Don't lose the crush washer on the drain bolt.

Step 4. Replace the drain plug and its crush washer, then use a torque wrench to tighten the plug to 12 foot-pounds.

Step 5. Remove the heat shield to access the oil filter. It's on the right side of the motor and can be found behind the passenger seat. Remove the two T40 Torx bolts, then slide the heat shield out of the way.

Step 6. Place a rag underneath the oil filter to catch any oil that runs out of the filter. This keeps the oil from getting on the engine and smoking when you crank it up again.

Step 7. Use an oil filter wrench to remove the oil filter.

Step 8. Spread a little oil around the O-ring at the top of the new oil filter before installing it. Hand-tighten the oil filter first, then use the oil filter wrench to tighten it about another ¾ of a turn.

Step 9. Refill the engine oil through the oil fill opening in the valve cover. The Polaris Ranger 900 XP takes about 2.5 quarts of oil, which is exactly what's in the oil change kit.

PRO TIP: To set the level, put in 2 quarts, and about half of the half-quart container from the kit.

Step 10. Replace the fill cap and start the unit, letting it run for a minute or two to circulate the oil.

Step 11. Check the level by removing the dipstick, cleaning it, then sliding it all the way back into place and removing it again.

NOTE: Our level was a little low, so we added the last half of the half-quart container.

Step 12. Reinstall the heat shield with the two T40 Torx bolts and you're done.
