NOTE: We used the Polaris oil change kit for service on a 2009 Polaris Sportsman 850XP, but you can buy the oil and filter separately. However, the kit conveniently includes everything you need, and it’s cheaper than purchasing the oil and filter individually.

Changing Polaris ATV Engine Oil

Step 1. Run the engine for a minute to warm the oil, which helps it drain easier.

Step 2. Remove the oil fill cap/dipstick from the top of the frame, which helps the crankcase vent and the oil to drain faster.

Step 3. Put a drain pan under the engine, then remove the 6mm Allen drain bolt and crush washer from the underside of the crankcase and let the oil drain out.

Step 4. Inspect the crush washer and replace it if it’s worn, then reinstall the drain bolt and torque it to 21 foot-pounds.

Step 5. Keep the drain pan in place to catch any oil spills, then remove the oil filter from the underside of the crankcase with a 65mm filter wrench.

Step 6. Apply a thin coat of oil to the new oil filter’s O-ring, then install the new oil filter and torque it to 12 foot-pounds.

Step 8. Reinstall the oil fill cap/dipstick, then start the engine and let it idle for half a minute to distribute the oil within the engine.

Step 9. Shut off the engine and let it sit for a minute so the oil can settle.

Step 10. Remove the oil fill cap/dipstick, then check the oil level by resting the dipstick on the crankcase threads without screwing it in. Top off the oil if necessary, then reinstall the oil fill cap/dipstick and you’re done.
