Partzilla Live Q&A Highlights – ATV Electrical/Starting Problems

Yamaha ATV Electrical Problems

I have an 06 YFZ450 and my clutch cable touched my starter wire and now I have no spark. I checked the stator and the spark plug. What else could it be?

John Talley:Obviously it upset something in there, and well it’s a very simple system, so what do you have? You’ve got your CDI, which is basically your ECU, then your coil, and then the spark plug. Pretty simple. Let’s hope that it may have just overheated a wire. I don’t know how long it stayed connected to your clutch cable, but could it have potentially tried to ground it or sent the ground all the way up to the handlebar and maybe gotten into your cutoff switch? Let’s start with the simplest thing first. Make sure that cutoff switch didn’t try to act like an engine ground with that much current going through your clutch cable. Just a thought, but maybe that battery voltage was trying to get to ground and it didn’t care which way it was going, looking for the path of least resistance. Check the kill switch on it. Hopefully it’s something as simple as that. Other than that, you may have to get another ECU. Take a peek to see if that’ll take care of it, but I’d check everything else first before ordering an ECU. …

I have a 2003 Raptor and it won’t start. When I hit the button, it just winds. Is it the starter or the battery?

John Talley: We’ve done several “help my ATV won’t start” videos, and I go through the basic process of troubleshooting why your machine isn’t turning over. But one of the first things you want to look at is your battery. Does it have enough voltage over 12.5, and second of all, is it healthy? I’ve seen batteries that you’re able to charge up but they won’t have the delivery system to back it up, to get things to turn over. And you also want to make sure it’s not your starter solenoid before you go replacing the starter, because they’re not cheap. But check out one of our videos …

Honda ATV Electrical Problems

My 2021 TRX 420 won’t start. All fuses are good, lots of spark, but it won’t start. Need help.

John Talley: A 2021? She’s still under warranty, I would think. The dealership would need to deal with that, but it sounds like you have spark, so the other two things you need are air and fuel. So when you turn it on initially, can you hear the fuel pump prime? Because it should run for a second and a half, maybe two seconds, and I wonder if you have a fuel pump issue. I think there was a recall on those, back in like 2015. I could be wrong, but it sounds like it’s going to be a fuel issue. But don’t touch it if it’s still under warranty. Take it to the dealership and make them straighten it out.
