Featured Product: Motion Pro Chain Alignment Tool
Correct chain alignment is vital to your motorcycle’s performance and the longevity of its drivetrain.
Even the slightest misalignment in the chain will result in excessive wear of the front and rear sprockets, and of the chain itself. If that’s not bad enough, a misaligned chain will sap power going to the rear wheel and prevent the bike from tracking properly, which ruins the handling.
Most motorcycles have alignment marks etched into the swingarm, but these aren’t always reliable. If you want to be absolutely sure your chain is tracking perfectly straight, you’ll need to use a quality chain alignment tool. Watch the video above and follow the steps below to see how to use the Motion Pro chain alignment tool.
NOTE: We used the Motion Pro chain alignment tool on a Suzuki RM-Z450 dirt bike, but the method is the same for all motorcycle chains.
Using the Motion Pro Chain Alignment Tool
Step 1. Place the chain alignment tool over a link in the chain directly above the rear axle.
Step 2. Tighten the set screw on the alignment tool until it’s securely gripping the rear sprocket.
Step 3. Look along the alignment rod of the alignment tool to see if the chain is running parallel to the rod. If the chain angles outward or inward, the axle will need to be adjusted accordingly.
Using the Motion Pro chain alignment tool is really that simple. Whether you’re out on the track, on the trail or at home in your garage, you can check the alignment on your motorcycle’s chain anytime in a matter of seconds.
