How to Change Honda Shadow VT750 Oil

An oil change on a Honda motorcycle can be done in minutes, and doing it regularly will add thousands of miles to the life of your bike’s engine.

  • 17mm wrench

Honda Shadow VT750 Oil Change Steps

Step 1. Run the engine for a couple of minutes to warm the oil up and thin it out a bit, making it easier to drain.

Step 2. Remove the oil fill cap/dipstick so the crankcase can breathe as you're draining the oil.

Step 3. Find the drain bolt, which is located on the underside of the motorcycle. Next, get a drain pan ready and remove the bolt with a 17mm wrench to drain the oil.

NOTE: Keep track of the drain bolt crush washer. If it’s missing or damaged, you’ll need to replace it. Use our Honda Shadow crankcase parts diagram if you can’t find the drain bolt (#21).

Step 4. Replace the drain bolt and its crush washer once the oil has drained. Use a torque wrench to tighten the drain bolt to 22 foot-pounds.

Step 5. Remove the oil filter using a 65mm oil filter wrench. The Honda Shadow 750 oil filter is located near the rear tire.

Step 6. Smear a little oil around the seal at the top of the O-ring on the filter to make it easier to remove next time.

Step 7. Replace the old oil filter, and torque the new oil filter to 19 foot-pounds.

Step 8. Refill the engine with oil. The Honda Shadow takes 2.6 quarts of 10W-30 oil

Step 9. Replace the fill cap/dipstick once you’re close on the oil level, then run the engine for a minute or two to circulate the new oil.

Step 10. Check the oil level by removing the fill cap/dipstick, wiping it off, and sitting the dipstick on the crankcase. Top off the oil if necessary and you’re done.
