Changing the Oil in a Honda CBR954RR

Step 1. Run the engine for a minute or two to warm up the oil, which makes it easier to drain.

Step 2. Remove the oil fill cap to allow the engine to breathe as you drain it.

Step 3. Get a drain pan underneath the engine, and use a 12mm socket to remove the drain bolt.

NOTE: See our oil pump diagram for the Honda CBR954 for reference. Also, the bolt has a crush washer attached that you'll want to inspect for damage and replace if it's worn.

Step 4. Replace the drain bolt and its washer after the engine drains completely, and use a torque wrench to tighten it to 22 foot-pounds.

Step 5. Remove the oil filter, which is located in the front of the engine.

PRO TIP: You can use an oil filter wrench for this, but it's a tight fit, so we removed ours by hand.

Step 6. Prepare the new oil filter by using your finger to smear a light coat of oil on the O-ring at the top of the filter. This makes it easier to remove the next time you change the oil.

Step 9. Replace the fill cap, and run the engine for a minute or two to circulate the oil. Finally, check the oil level on the sight glass and top it off if necessary.

NOTE: The two lines on either side of the top and the two on the bottom of the sight glass represent the upper and lower limits for the oil level. If your oil level is between the upper and lower lines (preferably in the middle), you’ve got a good level.

The steps for changing the oil on a Honda motorcycle are the usually same or similar for all models. However, if you want an alternate take on a Honda motorcycle oil service, watch the video above to see how to change the oil on a CBR 600.
