Honda CB750 Oil Change

Changing the oil in a Honda motorcycle can be done with a handful of basic tools, a replacement oil filter, several quarts of engine oil and very little time. 

Follow the steps below and watch the video above to learn how to do a quality oil change service on a Honda CB750 motorcycle.

NOTE: We changed the oil in a 1982 Honda CB750, but the steps are the same or similar for all Honda motorcycles. 

Tools and Parts – Honda CB750 Oil Change

• Ratchet
• 17mm socket
• Torque wrench

• Drain pan
• Oil filter
• 10W-40 motorcycle oil (4 quarts) 

How to Change the Oil in a Honda CB750

Step 1. Run the engine for a minute to warm the oil, which helps it drain faster.

Step 2. Remove the dipstick from the left side of the crankcase, which also helps the oil to drain faster by allowing the engine to vent.

Step 3. Put a drain pan under the engine, then remove the 17mm drain bolt and crush washer from the underside of the crankcase and let the oil drain out.

Step 4. Inspect the crush washer and replace it if necessary. Next, reinstall the drain bolt and torque it to 21 foot-pounds.

PRO TIP: The crush washer should be replaced after every three or four oil changes regardless of its condition to prevent leaks coming from the drain bolt.

Step 5. Put the drain pan under the oil filter housing, then remove the 17mm oil filter housing bolt and the oil filter housing assembly.

Step 6. Remove the old oil filter from the filter housing, being careful not to lose the spring beneath it. Next, remove the larger O-ring from the filter housing and the smaller O-ring from the housing bolt.

Step 7. Install the new O-rings (included with the OEM Honda oil filter) to the housing bolt and filter housing.

Step 8. Reinstall the spring into the filter housing, followed by the new oil filter.

Step 9. Reinstall the oil filter housing assembly onto the engine, and torque the oil filter housing bolt to 21 foot-pounds.

Step 10. Fill the engine with 3.9 quarts of 10W-40 motor oil. 

Step 11. Reinstall the dipstick, then start the engine and let it idle for 30 seconds to distribute the oil within the engine. 

Step 12. Shut off the engine and let it sit for a minute so the oil can settle.

Step 13. Remove the oil fill cap/dipstick, then check the oil level by resting the dipstick on the crankcase threads without screwing it in. Top off the oil if necessary, then reinstall the dipstick and you’re done.
