When a starting clutch goes bad, does it start slipping a little at a time or do they usually just quit and never grip again? I’m assuming I need to replace the whole thing at once on my 2001 TRX 400EX. Am I right?
John Talley: I’ve seen both, in either direction, where they lock down and wouldn’t let go. And I’ve seen them where they wouldn’t engage at all. I’ve seen them where it’ll catch sometimes and sometimes it won’t. An ‘01, yeah you’re pretty much due for it, especially if you’ve got some hours on it. But it’s really not that hard to get to that particular one, it’s not that tough to do. Is there anything else you need to take into account while you’re in there? Probably not. There’s no preventative maintenance stuff that you would need to do while you’re in there. But yes, I’ve seen them fail in every single conceivable condition.
