ATV Oil Change Q&A: Honda and Yamaha

What happens when you roll your ATV and oil comes out of the airbox? Do you have to do anything else besides clean out the airbox and add more engine oil? 

One of our live Q&A viewers rolled their Yamaha ATV and asked our resident powersports pro John Talley for advice on what to check. John goes live on our YouTube channel every Friday at 3pm Eastern, and in this session, he answered a couple of questions about engine oil changes for Honda and Yamaha ATVs. 

Honda ATV Oil Change

What oil do you recommend for an 05 Honda Rancher oil change?

John Talley: I like the 10W-30 semi-synthetic HP oil from Honda. That’s the one I usually go to. It’s the one in the gold bottle, if memory serves. Do not use the one in the silver bottle, because it has moly in it and that will make the clutch slip, so don’t go with that one.

Yamaha ATV Oil Change

I recently rolled my Yamaha Grizzly. Oil came out of the airbox, which I've already cleaned out. Besides adding more oil, do you have recommendations as to what else I should check engine wise?

John Talley: Once you get it rolled back over and let everything settle back down and you’ve already cleaned out your airbox, it may pull some residual oil that you couldn’t get to, maybe into the intake and it’s just going to burn that up. But other than that you shouldn’t have to do anything to it, except be more careful. Try to keep these things on four wheels or two. 

A Yamaha Grizzly YFM700 oil change is an easy job that can be done with a couple of basic tools, including a 65mm oil filter wrench. The engine oil in a Grizzly 700 quad should be changed at least every 3,200 miles or once a year.
