2008 Kawasaki Ninja EX650 Oil Change

Getting the oil changed in a Kawasaki motorcycle only takes a handful of tools and minutes, and like any other maintenance job, it needs to get done.

Tools and Supplies – Kawasaki Ninja EX650 Oil Change

  • Ratchet and extensions
  • 17mm socket
  • 6mm Allen
  • 64mm oil filter wrench

NOTE: We changed the oil in a 2008 Kawasaki Ninja EX650, but the steps are the same or similar for all Kawasaki motorcycle models.

How to Change the Oil in a 2008 Kawasaki Ninja EX650

Step 1. Remove the oil fill cap to help the crankcase vent properly when draining out the oil.

Step 2. Position a drain pan under the motor, then remove the 17mm oil drain bolt and crush washer from the underside of the engine.

Step 3. Inspect the crush washer for wear and replace it if necessary. 

NOTE: Replace the crush washer every 3-4 oil changes regardless of its condition to prevent leaks.

Step 4. Reinstall the 17mm oil drain bolt and crush washer, and torque the bolt to 22 foot-pounds.

Step 5. Remove the three 6mm Allens and two push pins holding the lower faring on the motorcycle in place, followed by the faring itself, to access the oil filter.

Step 6. Position a drain pan under the oil filter and remove the old oil filter using a 64mm oil filter wrench.

Step 7. Lightly oil the gasket on the new oil filter, then install the new filter and torque it to 12 foot-pounds.

Step 8. Fill the engine with 2 quarts of Kawasaki 10W40 motorcycle engine oil

NOTE: You can use oil from any manufacturer, as long as it’s a formula designed for a wet clutch system.

Step 9. Reinstall the oil fill cap and run the engine on idle for 3-5 minutes to circulate the oil within the motor.

Step 10. Shut off the engine, and let it sit for another 3-5 minutes so the oil fully settles and you can get an accurate oil level reading.

Step 11. Read the oil level on the sight glass (located on the right side of the motorcycle, close to the rear brake). The oil level should be between the upper and lower markings beside the sight glass. Top off the oil if necessary and you’re done.
